One Dress, Ten Ways!

How to Make Your Closet Work Overtime
I come from a family of hoarders. My mom hoards craft supplies, my aunts hoards mystery novels/games, my uncle hoards art and graphic novels, and my grandparents hoard everything else. My grandma has three fur coats from the 40's, and my grandpa makes planters out of toilets and tubs because he can't bear the thought of giving it away.
I didn't skip out on this trait. I have TONS of clothes. And shoes. And an unreasonable amount of scarves and sweaters considering I live in the desert. I mean I can go a whole month without doing laundry and still have plenty of clothes to spare. It's pretty bad.
I'm moving into a new apartment next week, and one of my goals is to streamline my belongings. My furniture is minimal, and my book collection is just enough to give life to my shelves, so the key here is my wardrobe.
I'm on the verge of tears just thinking about it.
I was reading a bunch of books about minimalism, and one of the themes that kept popping out to me is, "Everything must serve more than one purpose".
Oh.
So those electric lime heels that only match that one dress should probably go...
I have a tiny portion of my closet with me right now since I only took a carry-on to Seattle, so I wanted to see how much I could stretch each piece. I started with an easy basic that I bought right before my trip up here: The striped dress.
The Striped Dress

H&M: $12.95
I'm in love with this dress. It's light weight and stretchy, making it super comfortable to wear, and virtually impossible to wrinkle, so it's the perfect dress to pack on a summer trip. The black and white stripes are super cute, and perfect for highlighting a curvy shape like my own. Plus, it goes with EVERYTHING! I'm sure this dress will have even more potential when I get home and I can mix it with the rest of my wardrobe.

People, you need to start knitting... or something

Attention all Young Adults: Learn to make shit.

Hi.

I'm 20 years old, and I am a cat-lady in training, minus the cats. I love knitting, reading, and complaining about the kids on my lawn. I make jam as a thank you gift, tailor all of my own clothing, and find infinite amounts of joy in buttons (I have a jewelry box full of buttons- organized by color and size of course...)
I'm an undergraduate music major with aspirations of getting a PhD in fuddy-duddying.
And I refuse to apologize.
Let's face it, my crafting makes me just a teensy tiny bit more useful than the average kid my age, and here's why you should pick some needles and start making things:

1. It's meditative. I find peace in patterns and routine, and after a long day doing whatever I'm doing, I can come home, perform a small ritual, and just let my mind wander.

2. You have complete control over at least one aspect of your life. You can choose the color, the texture, and of course the design of any project you make.

3. Everything you make is one of a kind! If you can't find it, you can make it, and NO ONE ELSE will have it.

4. It lasts forever. My grandma is still wearing a sweater that her mother made her for her honeymoon. That was over 40 years ago people. No holes, no pilling, and so so soft. I'm hoping to inherit it, because pure alpaca is hard to find, and soooo expensive.

5. It's gratifying. You spent hours and hours doing the same thing over and over, and in the end, you a guaranteed a finished product!

6. You can totally make your hobby into charity. Personally, I make more hats and scarves than I'll ever need (hello, Cali girl raised in Arizona)and whatever I don't use myself or give to friends/ family, I donate. Double duty! My hobby helps others.

7. You'll always have a conversation starter. Try whipping out some knitting in Starbucks- people will come up to you, and they WILL ask you for a sweater.

8. It's a relatively inexpensive hobby- I spent two skeins on my last project, and it took me 12 hours to finish. So my 5$ investment was 12 hours of entertainment! Not too shabby, and it's a helluva lot cheaper than video-gaming.

9. If we were in a zombie apocalypse, I'd be SO USEFUL. Net-making: check bitches. Post-apocalyptic frozen tundra- I'll make a damn parka. Someone in our camp caught the infection- I'll make a noose in no time. Knitting needles= tiny spears, extra fucking pointy. Don't mess with the granny in training, I will TAKE.YOU.OUT. (zombies. I mean the zombies)

It doesn't have to be knitting, or sewing, or painting, but find something artistic to do in your everyday life. Make something from scratch with your hands, and stand back to see what you made. You don't even have to be good at it! Find a way to make beauty and stability in a world that is sometimes harsh and illogically cruel.  You will reap the rewards of your own handiwork, and you will be a better person for it. Trust me.

P.S. Here's my latest project. So cute right?? FRINGE <3

Here's the lace pattern stretched out so you can really see it.

Come on a Hike with me!

Hey guys!

This morning I had a hiking date, and I was scrambling around to find something that was both sweat-proof and date worthy (a rare combo) and this is what I came up with! Totally easy to move in, and it looks like you put in effort without putting in too much effort. ;)

First things first, CLOTHES!

Cute, comfy, and practical!
My jacket is from REI, and I bought it during the member sale in December for only 20 bucks! It's a light weight synthetic material that wicks away moisture (i.e. nasty stanky sweat) and is just warm enough to keep out the breeze. It has zippered pockets on the outside, and an internal pocket for your phone/ipod, with a hole for your headphones to thread through. I don't know if you can see them from the picture, but the sleeves also have thumb holes! Keep those metacarpals all nice and cozy ya'll.
The shirt is a Lulu Lemon rip off from target, and it has a comfy built in bra that's perfect for low impact activities like light hiking. I think it was only 15 bucks or so? Bye obscenely expensive name brands. Ain't nobody got time for you! And by time I mean cash, because hello, college, I have priorities here thankyouverymuch.
The leggings are maximum compression capri-length leggings from Old Navy, and they ROCK. I have these in 3 patterns and they are super comfy, breathable, and my butt looks fan-freaking-tastic in them. Almost like I work out and do actual squats. What more do you want out of a pair of leggings? Thank you spandex! They run about 25 dollars pretty consistently, I've never seen them on sale. That being said, these will last you about two years of constant use, and are worth the cost of dinner and a movie. (I would know...)
My shoes are lilac Pumas that match my top, and I think they were 30 smackaroos at Ross. (See what I did there? All coordinated and shit. Hell yeah)
At the same member's sale that I got my jacket, I also got this little Camel back for 30 green, which if you've ever even looked at a Camel Back, you KNOW that's a steal. I love that this one is a waist-belt, it simultaneously carries a liter of water, my keys, sunscreen and lip balm, while also cinching in my waist. Eh? Pretty good right? Right.

Time to do your Hurr Ladies!
(And Gents. I don't believe in gender binaries, and if you have some luscious long locks going on, then you need to get it up and out of your way too.)

For my hair, I'm just doing a bit of an amped-up pony. I started off with a Dutch French Braid starting at my left ear and going over to my right. To do this, all you have to do is section off a 2-3 inch section right next to your hairline, and instead of crossing the left and right pieces over the middle bit, you're going to cross them under! Ta-daah, the secret to the Dutch Braid are revealed! Once you get to the other ear, go ahead secure the end, and pull each side of each little plait so it flattens out, and gives you the appearance of having a thicker braid.
I don't believe in teasing my hair because it causes so much damage, so instead I twisted the top half of the hair I have allotted for my pony, and pouffed it up a bit for some volume at the crown.

Now take out whatever you have holding the braid, and swipe everything into a pony! DONE. So easy!
Mmm dat Dutch braid tho.
Finish it on up!
So before I head out the door, I'm going to swipe on some pink lip balm and a decent coat of mascara for a natural and minimalist look. Nothing is grosser than having your face melt off mid-date, so keep that face nice and bare. I popped on my favorite studs, and called it good. Oh, and one last thing, SO MUCH SUNSCREEN.
Guys. Seriously. Wear it. I'm begging you. Your skin is begging you. Just do it. (Nike swoop)

Now Go Enjoy your Nature-Date!

Get Ready with Me!

Let's Get Ready to Face the World!

Yesterday I did a post about how I get ready for bed, so I figured that a morning routine was the obvious next choice, (since I know you're dying to find out what those headband curls look like!)
Here we go!

By the time you wake up, your headband is going to be a bit loose, and ready to fall out, so go ahead and free your curls! Shake them up a bit and muss up your roots for a bit of lift, and you're done! That's right, you #wokeuplikethis.
If needed pin it out of the way while you prep your face.

Since you just woke up, you don't really need to use a cleanser, so I just splash some warm water on my face, and pat it off with a soft fluffy towel. Then I use my favorite toner by Lush (Breath of Fresh Air) on a cotton pad, and wipe away any dust that may have settled while I was asleep. You're definitely going to want to use some sun protection, and Neutrogena's Clear Face Sunscreen in SPF 55 is my favorite! I can't stress how important sunscreen is! It prevents all kinds of damage from the sun, ranging from premature aging, to sun burns and  it prevents skin cancer! Don't skip it!

While you're letting all of that sink in, it's time to get dressed!

It's a bit chilly today in Seattle, so I decided to go with this snuggly sweater from Wet Seal to go over my summer outfit. This is an embroidered high-low top from Torrid, and I love the semi-sheer quality of the top, which easily takes it from day to night with a change of bottoms. I zoomed in on the embroidery so you can see the super pretty roses that make a V shape around the neckline. So cute! Since it is a bit sheer, I usually wear a bandeau or a cami underneath, but since my shorts are high waisted, I decided I would go with a plain black bra for an added bit of sex appeal. The shorts are denim cutoffs that I made for myself from some Gap jeans I got from Buffalo Exchange. I love making my own shorts because it's SUPER easy, and it allows you to customize the length, so it's as flattering as can be. For a bit of added grunge, I'm wearing my brand new Doc Martin's. They have this awesome Victorian floral print, which give some added interest. Last but not least, I'm finishing up the look with some polymer rose studs I got from Claires. The whole look is comfortable and  easy, perfect for a cooler summer day.

Now that you're all dressed, it's time to do your face!

First Start with some primer! This is Rimmel's Stay Matte Primer. Of course you should always use primer, as it creates a smooth and prepped canvas to put the rest of your makeup. It helps your makeup to last longer, and stay more vivid. On Summer days, it's hot and humid, and this mattifier is going to help us with the oil situation. I don't like wearing powder since it tends to just get gunky throughout the day, and with this I don't have to! Just add a pea sized amount to your fingertips, and smooth onto your face and neck, not forgetting your eye area.

At this point, I like to put on some chap stick so that my lips are nice and smooth by the time I get around to put on whatever lip product I'm using that day. This is Burt's Bee's Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom, which is this lovely sheer pink color.

Next is Tinted moisturizer! This is MAC's Studio Moisture Tint in Medium. Tinted moisturizer is great for the summer because it isn't as thick as foundation, and it allows the skin to breath through the product. There's tons of tinted moisturizers on the market, but I like this one best because it has a fuller coverage than most, and it stays all day long. It's a bit more expensive, but this little bottle lasts forever! Now this does have an SPF of 15, but I like to layer it over real sunscreen because SPF really isn't a lot, and being an Arizona native, that's just not going to cut it. Like all MAC products, this is highly pigmented, so you only need a dab. Go ahead and rub this into your face and neck!

Now that you have a smooth foundation, go ahead and put on some concealer on any spots you may have. This is Benefit's Skin Duo Compact, which has Boi-ing Concealer in No.2 and Lemon Aid Eye Primer. I'm using a concealer brush from a set that I got in New York last year in just a random drug store. The brand is Prevail, and it's a set of four double ended brushes that come in super handy. Right now I'm using the concealer brush for pointed application. Keep the compact and brush close, you're going to use it for your brows soon. I also took the same balm that I used on my lips to apply on my cheeks for a sheer wash of color. Just draw on two small circles onto the apples of your cheeks and blend it on out for a natural looking flush.

Your eyebrows serve as a frame for your whole face, and not completing them leaves you looking unpolished. To the right you can see one brow done, one undone and the subtle difference is still enough to make an impact.  For my brows, I actually like to use an eyebrow pencil. I find that the creamy quality stays better than regular eyeshadow, and it acts as a bit of a gel, keeping my brows together. This one in particular is Jordana's 12-hr Eyeshadow Pencil in Dark Brown. To apply this I'm going to use my angled eyeliner brush to brush on the product in short hair-like strokes to fill in any sparse parts of my brow.

Look at the Difference!

Now we're going to take that Benefit compact to highlight and prime our eye. Using the Concealer brush, apply some of the Boi-ing Concealer on the eyelid, and Lemon Aid Eye Primer under neath the arch of the eye brow as a highlighter. Blend until the two meld seamlessly.

Now that your eyes are prepped, it's time for eyeshadow! This is the Naked Palette by Urban Decay and I'm in love with it. I got it two years ago as a Christmas gift from my mum, and I use it for everything from day-to-day events all the way through performances and recitals. They are highly pigmented and vegan, and I almost never use anything else. For eye shadow application I'm using one of my double ended brushes by Prevail.
For the base color, I'm using the color Sin, and applying it with a fluffy angled brush all over my lid. Then I'm going to put this aside for a bit so I can put on eyeliner.
I have naturally almond shaped eyes, and I find that a cat-eye is most flattering option. I love Revlon's Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen in Darkest Black for this, because it is essentially a felt-tipped pen, and it allows for really clean and controlled lines. It's cleaner and easier to travel with as well.
The first step in making the perfect cat eye is drawing a thin straight line across your lashes. This will serve as your base to build upon, so the thinner and closer you can getting it to your lash line the better!

After lining your lashes, it's time for the flick. I've found that the easiest way to get a natural looking and symmetrical flick on both eyes is to open my eyes and follow the curve of the last lash. Now that you have the base, just connect the flick to the straight line and you're done!

Now this next step is strictly optional, but I love doing it, because I find that it helps to make everything look clean and crisp. I like to take my rounded eyeliner brush and swipe on some of the lightest color in my palette, which in this case is the color Virgin. Now with my loaded brush, I like to make an even line on top of my cat eye. This is nice because it helps to conceal any imperfections that may have occurred, and this lighter color will make my lashes pop!

Now that you have your shadow done, go ahead and do your lashes. I have pretty long lashes naturally, but they're stick straight, so I ALWAYS curl them up! This makes my eyes look bigger and more awake. I'm using a Revlon Eyelash Curler, and starting at the base of my lashes, holding for 10 seconds, and working up in small pumps up all the way to the end of the lashes. After that, apply 1-2 coats of mascara, taking extra care to separate as you go, because no one wants spider lashes! I'm using Revlon Falsies in Blackest Black, Waterproof Solution. No matter what I do during a summer day, from hiking to swimming, this stays put! It's the best.

Last but not least, lock in your hard work with a bit of setting spray! This is Urban Decay's All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, and it really lives up to its name. I use this before shows, and after three hours of dancing under hot lights, my makeup stays put perfectly. To apply, just spritz in an X shape across your face, about eight inches away, then in a T-shape to seal everything in. Allow to dry before scratching or futzing with your face.
THE FINAL LOOK!
Natural and clean, this is my go-to look for everything! Again, I'm sure this looks like it took forever, but getting ready only takes me 15-20 minutes in the morning. I hope you enjoyed this step-by-step, now go out and Carpe the shit out of that Diem!

Look Ma, no filter!

Get Ready for Bed with Me!

When I was younger, I suffered from really bad insomnia, sleeping about 2-3 hours a night, for a whole year. I tried everything, from tea, to baths, to prescription sleeping pills and nothing worked. Ultimately the installment of a night ritual helped me to fall into a normal sleep cycle. This is the beauty portion, but the entire night cycle lasts about an hour, and I follow it religiously. When I don't, I suffer huge migraines, puffy eyes, dark circles, and major cranky fits. This is really more for all ya'll than me, no one wants to spend time with no-sleep me. It's a blood bath, anyone who has witnessed it knows.

I go to bed at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time every morning as not to disturb my own natural circadian rhythm. When I pay heed to my bed time, I can wake up naturally without an alarm. (Though I do set one just in case, but I usually wake up before it can go off). I start this bit of the nightly ritual about an hour before I want to go to bed, so in this case, 11pm.

It's called "Beauty Sleep" for a reason ya'll.

Okay, first things first, get dat hurr up outta your pretty mug! A loose bun and thick headband works best for
this, as you want to get all of those baby hairs out of the way when you're washing your face. It doesn't matter how it looks, because we'll be taking this down and using the headband for a sleep style later on, so keep it close and relatively dry!

I don't wear makeup on a daily basis, but when I do, I like to use a face wipe to remove my makeup prior to washing my face. I love using Alba Botanica's Hawaiian 3-in-1 Clean Towelettes, for a few reasons:
1) It's an all-organic, all-natural, cruelty-free brand that's relatively affordable, and super accessible, as you can buy it from any local drugstore and most grocery stores
2) On nights when I just can't get to the sink to wash my face, either because I'm at someone else's place, traveling, or post-show and too damn tired, these are 3-in-1 and do a pretty good job of getting my face clean and moisturized in one step, and of course, they're prepackaged and super portable.  I don't recommend doing this all the time, but when you're in a pinch, these are awesome.
3) It has pineapple extracts which feel tingly and works as a natural astringent to really break up oil and flush those pores
4) They smell absolutely amaaaazing. Nuff said.

After getting all of my icky makeup off, it's time to steam your face! I like to do this because it helps to open my pores, and give the cleanser easier access. My mom taught me how to make these washcloths, and I like them better than regular terry cloth ones because they're smoother, and softer. This one in particular is made from organic cotton yarn, which is great because they're machine washable, and just get softer after every wash. I just one of these babies under some hot water, squeeze out a bit of the excess water, and smooth it out on my face. I leave it there for 20-30 seconds, or until the cloth is no longer hot.

Now it's time for face wash! Not going to lie, I have a bit of a fetish for Lush products as you'll soon learn, and I have yet to find a product that I don't adore. They're a primarily vegan company that specializes in crafting handmade products that are all natural, organic, and cruelty free. Right now I'm working my way through a pot of Lush's Herbalism, which smells like an herb garden! I have combination skin that is a bit oily in the T-one area, and dry on my cheeks, and this really helps to regulate it. It comes in this green paste, and you have to mix it with a bit of water prior to using it. It says to mix it half and half, product with water, but I find that the best consistency actually comes from two parts product to one part water. Mess with it, and see what you like best! Work the product in using circular motions for about 40 seconds to a minute. Take that cloth back out and gently wipe the product off. Rinse the cloth and hang it to dry.

Next up is toner! Toner is crucial ya'll, and not a step to be skipped! Depending on your skin type, this can either be moisturizing or astringent based on your own particular needs. This is a toner by Lush called Breath of Fresh Air, and it is DELIGHTFUL. It has sea water and algae extracts and it smells like the ocean! (In a good way, not in a dead-fish kind of way). The algae extracts are incredibly nutritious for your skin, imparting moisture and fighting acne without the harmful chemicals found in over the counter spot treatments. You can either spray this directly onto your face, or onto a cotton pad. I personally use a cotton pad just because of the way it feels, but you do you boo!

You always need to seal in moisture with your favorite skin cream. Right now I'm in love with Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. Kiehl is an older brand founded in 1851, and most of their products haven't changed their ingredients since the company's first batch. It's a company that strives to use all natural and sustainable ingredients, and is tied with multiple charities benefiting children, HIV/AIDS survivors, and of course, the environment. I use this cream because I generally hate the feeling of moisturizer just sitting on the top of the skin, and this one is super light and sinks right in without any oily residue. It's also fragrence free, which is great for my sensitive skin.

Last but not least, you're never too young to start using wrinkle cream. I'm 20, and in my field, it's crucial to look and feel young and vital for as long as possible for casting purposes. The best way to fight aging, is prevention, which means sun care in the morning (ALWAYS!) and wrinkle cream at night. My mom worked for Estee Lauder back when she was in college, and swears by this product. Estee Lauder's Resilience Lift Creme is technically supposed to be used on your entire face, but being as young as I am, I tend to focus on the thinnest skin on my face, because that will always show the signs of aging first: this means eyes and lips. I take a tiny dab and apply it to the entire surface of my eyelid and under eye, and a bit on the outer bit of my lip. A little goes a long way, so be sure not to over apply! This product won't work if your skin can't breathe through the product.

You're done with your face! Awww yeahhh so soft, like a baby's ass, yeahhh. (Who decided that was a compliment by the way? Isn't a baby's tummy or hand just as soft? I'd rather be as soft as a baby's tum really. Let's start using that instead yeah?)

But wait! There's more!
Brush your teeth and get that nasty business out of the way. Typically I mix up my own paste using one part baking soda, one part water with a drop of peppermint oil,  but since I'm at my mom's right now, I'm using a more travel-friendly option. These are Dirty Toothy Tabs by Lush, and it's the next best thing to making your own paste. They come in these Altoid size bits, that you just chew up and brush all across your teeth. No weird chemicals! These are super compact and since they're dry, you can take them pretty much anywhere. I have a pack in my suitcase, my purse, and my gym duffel at all times. You'll never know when the craving for garlic bread will strike and you've GOT to be prepared! DON'T FORGET TO FLOSS!

You gotta do your hurr right? Girl. Get your weave in order, that shit is a messss.

Take your hair out of whatever ratty bun it was in before, and remove your headband. (Keep it close, you'll need it in a bit). Go ahead and brush those knots out! I have naturally wavy/curly hair, so I avoid brushing my hair in the morning as not to give my self a big pouf of frizzies or break up whatever natural texture I have going on that day. I like this little brush, because the plastic bristles are pretty spread apart and really flexible so it won't damage my hair. Plus it looks like an Easter egg!

Wet your hair, and apply a bit of leave-in conditioner or oil. I've almost demolished this bottle of It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Product, because it is the SHIZ. It's super moisturizing and light, and it smells super yummy, but not overwhelming. I have decently thick hair, so I use about 5 spritzes, but you adjust that to whatever your hair needs.

Now it's time for the magic! I learned about this method of night-styling online and it is the best thing I've every learned. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes two minutes to do, and you wake up with gorgeous, tangle-free, soft, curly hair, without any heat damage! Ready? OKAY!

First thing's first, be sure to choose the right headband. I usually use a green bamboo terry cloth band, but it's in the wash right now, so this will have to do! Use something that is about 2 inches wide, flat, stretchy, and absorbent. Make sure it isn't too tight, as you will be wearing this all night, and no one like to wake up with a headache. This headband is one I made myself out of some ratty yoga pants I had lying around, and is so soft and comfortable to wear. Position it on top of your hair, sitting at about your crown.

Next you need to take a 1" to 1-1/2" section of hair and simply loop it up and over the headband, pulling through so that it's flat. Literally that's it. Simply pick up more and more pieces and wrap it around the headband until you get to the back. Tuck whatever's left in the back bit, and if needed, secure with pins. My hair is medium-long, so I need a pin or two, but if your hair is longer than mine, you most likely won't. They call this the "Friar Tuck" and I think you can see why.

I know this may seem like a lot, but really this only takes me about 5-10 minutes. That's even with brushing the full two-minute amount, and flossing like your dentist keeps bugging you to do. Yeah. I floss. I'm pretty sure I get an A+ in life for just that. Like I said, this routine takes a full hour, and after I'm all cleaned up and prepped for bed, I play a bed time mix, and read a book on my tablet until lights out! Right now I'm reading White Teeth by Zadie Smith, and following up on my all-female summer reading list, and I'm loving her writing, she really has a way of enveloping you in the environment by painting these super vibrant and real characters. I absolutely recommend it! I also find that spacey-synth lullabies really help to put me out, and Songza is stocked to the brim with great mixes for every activity. They have super long mixes curated by actual music professionals (DJ's, critics, radio show hosts, the like) , and you can listen to HOURS of music without a single ad- It's my favorite. I have Songza downloaded on both my phone and tablet, and bookmarked on my computer, and I'm streaming from there almost 24/7. No matter what your taste in music, they'll have something just for you.

Well that's it folks! Take out your contacts and dream sweet dreams!
